  • Exodus is a confession of faith about the origins of Israel.


  • A kernel of history made into a theological drama.

Exodus: A Book of Origins
  • Exodus is a story about the creation of a religious community which sees that how it structures its life is fundamentally connected to the purpose in God’s historical plan.
  • Like all creation stories, it has cosmic significance and implications for humankind.  Not so much a historical story as much as a cosmic one.

  • Israel must choose between powers of bondage and death represented by Egypt/Pharaoh and freedom and responsibility present in exodus/covenant with God.
  • The Chosen One – Moses is chosen leader, Israel is chosen people.  Read Exodus 19:3-6a.
